"The American Fisheries Society recently identified 82 fish species as vulnerable, threatened, or endangered in North American waters, and 22 species as vulnerable, threatened, or endangered globally" (American Fisheries Society, 2005). Some of the world's most valued food and game fish are included in this list: several species of shark, Atlantic salmon, sturgeons, Atlantic halibut, and Pacific rockfish, among others.

As we increasingly deplete our marine resources, we face many questions: How long will these species of fish survive? Will we have to alter our diets if and when we completely eradicate them? Can we sufficiently alter our diets and remain healthy? Will other species take the depleted fish's place, or will our oceans slowly become barren?
